Emperor Nero employed a courier to provide his guests with iced delicacies. The Egyptians kept water cool by letting it evaporate through the pores of unglazed earthenware jugs. Hungarian peasants used a similar technique by coating glass demijohns with wet willow branches and straw. According to an old method of refrigeration, strips of flannel were attached to the ceiling with their ends dipped in water which they absorbed, thus humidifying the air.
